Stances are skills.
You have to learn them and put them on your bar. They work a lot like enchantments, except that the game treats them differently for certain effects (like the one you found on that item) and you can activate a stance at any time, even in the middle of casting a spell :P

no no, there was no stance on the item. The only way to use the bonus that was on the item was to be in a stance. LIke for example, the item may have had plus 10% to damage if your in a stance. so, you would have had to be in a stance to get the 10%, but I have no idea what a stance is or where to get one. Is this something you can find in newb land? I would think it would be seeing as I found the item in newb land

It is still various skills that put you in a stance. For example, warriors get a frenzy skill that increases their attack speed 33% and doubles the damage they take for X amount of seconds. This frenzy is considered a stance, so while a warrior is frenzied, he'd receive any bonuses that are given while in a stance.

I think that warriors and rangers have the most Stance skills. The caster classes don't have a lot, but they do have some.
I just recently got a Mesmer stance called "Hex Breaker"... a I love it!
But anyway, stances are skills, and some items give you bonuses while in a stance. If you don't have a stance skill, then you can't really do anything with that item.

In your skills menu, sort them by type and it should list any stances you have.

It's also worth noting that you can only be in one stance at a time.

So, what all this means is that the bonus is pretty much useless except for Warriors (and maybe Rangers).
